Vivid Art Gallery First Friday Art Opening

Vivid Art Gallery is hosting an exhibit for featured artist Susan Jacoby during the month of October. Entitled “In the Stillness”, it will show a variety of Jacoby’s newest work with a focus on her trademark landscapes. The gallery will also be hosting an opening for the exhibit on Friday, October 2nd, from 4-7 PM, in conjunction with the Hubbard Woods Design District’s Art Walk event. 
 
Jacoby’s latest work explores the power of nature and its ability to provide her with the language to create her own silent spaces. Surrounded by a wealth of ever-changing inspiration from the shores of Lake Michigan, Jacoby is drawn to expansive vistas, shifting skyscapes, and ephemeral atmospheric conditions. Rather than a realistic depiction of a place, her paintings evoke the remembrance of a moment, combining observation with imagination. 
 
A Winnetka artist, Jacoby intends to do with paint what nature does with light. Her paintings progress from direct observation, subsequently captured through photographs, to many thin layers of oil paint beginning with an all-over “sketch” that is done in brighter colors. This illuminates the muted tones as more translucent layers and glazes are applied. As the process continues the colors become more diluted, the edges softened, and she begins to obstruct and reveal elements of the landscape. While the images become more simplified the depth is enhanced. While her initial inspiration is the outside world, it is merely reference material for communicating her own visceral experience of a fleeting view. This process, she feels, opens a portal to a quiet and reflective space for mindful contemplation by the viewer.
