Vivid Art Gallery First Friday Art Opening
Vivid Art Gallery will host an art opening for Featured Artist Amie Campbell and Local Artist Caryn Constantinides on May 3rd at its monthly First Friday event. The opening, which runs from 5-8 PM, is open to all and is free of charge. In addition to great art, there will be refreshments, including the gallery’s signature “Monet Mule” cocktail. Live jazz will also be playing at the gallery to round out the evening.
Campbell will be presenting new abstract work in her exhibit entitled Storytelling. Her work is inspired by the natural world surrounding her Bloomington, Indiana, home. Her paintings, often diptychs or triptychs, are characterized by small, energetic brushstrokes which create movement and energy. Describing her process in creating a work of art, Campbell states, “A lot of times I’ll just start with a bold smear of color and it’s like opening a book. You start something on the canvas and then figure out what’s next. If you’re into the moment, it really just flows from there. The color tells you something, you tell it something back, and it’s like a conversation.”
Campbell’s work is also defined by the rich, saturated colors she uses. Describing the role of color in her work, she says, “The colors I choose are seasonal. You have to make some lighter and some darker and mix up the paint in different ways to get different characteristics. So when I’m painting, I pre-mix my colors, I don’t use a palette. I also use a lot of glazes - blue, magenta and gold. The glazes mimic light. They just transform and change things in interesting ways.”
Also on display during the month of March will be works by Local Artist Caryn Constantinides of Northfield. Her exhibit, titled Layers and Light, will include her most recent abstract paintings. Bold brushwork, textured layers, and the color blue are central elements of all of her pieces. Describing her art, Constantinides says, "My work aspires to use color, texture and form to evoke emotion. I usually begin with a color palette in mind, but no other direction. The work is the result of gestural marks and layers of paint building to create a balanced composition.
Constantinides’ show at the gallery is part of its “Local Artists Program,” which provides exhibition space to a different local artist each month. Says gallery owner Cynthia Burr, “We think it’s important to support the local art community by providing a space for local artists to show their work. It’s a way for artists to build their resumes and gauge public reaction to their work.”
In addition to the art opening at Vivid, a number of other businesses in the Hubbard Woods Design and Dine district will once again celebrate First Fridays with a “Cocktail Hop” and special promotions.
