Join the community in the planting of flags on the Village Green, September 10th, beginning at 4:00 pm to commemorate 9/11.
The planting of American flags on the Winnetka Village Green has been an annual, student-lead tradition since 2008 when then-North Shore Country Day student Genevieve Nielsen sought permission from the Village Council to erect a flag memorial at the base of the Cenotaph, to pay tribute to the 2,977 lives lost in the terrorist attack on the United States on September 11, 2001. Elliot Tucker, from New Trier High School is honored to be coordinating the commemoration again this year. At its August 19th Council meeting, the Village Council granted his request to again plant flags. The memorial is erected on September 10th, beginning at 4:00p.m., and is taken down at sunset on September 11th.
Based upon suggestions from past participants, new, sturdier 8 x 12” stick flags have been purchased and they will enhance this beautiful, solemn tribute. A special thank you to the generous donors:
Rob and Vicki Apatoff
Bob and Sandy Berger
Chris and Laurie Nielsen
Creed and Jessica Tucker
Bratschi Plumbing
The Grand Food Center Winnetka
Thank you also to Fire Chief Berkowsky and the Winnetka Fire Department, and Police Chief Kreis and the Winnetka Police Department, for assisting with the layout and supplying tools to help drill holes for the flag planting.
This Winnetka tradition is an annual, community-wide gathering of parents, children, seniors, veterans, first responders and more. Gather to plant flags to remember loved ones, friends, co-workers or fellow human beings who lost their lives, to remember the public safety officers who selflessly risked their lives to help others, and to remember the heroism, bravery and generosity of Americans that day, that exemplifies our great nation.
Please join in remembrance. All are welcome.
