Vivid Art Gallery First Friday Art Opening
Vivid Art Gallery will host an art opening for Featured Artist Larry Simon and Local Artist Lisa Kinzelberg on March 1st at its monthly First Friday event. The opening, which runs from 5-8 PM, is open to all and is free of charge. In addition to great art, there will be refreshments, including the gallery’s signature “Monet Mule” cocktail. Live jazz by bassist Sam Peters will round out the evening.
Simon will be presenting new work in his exhibit entitled The Poetry of Landscape.. His art photographs are characterized by a intriguing blend of sharp and soft focus. Discussing this aspect of his work, Simon says, “This process originated during a month-long stay in Venice. I can still see myself standing on the Accademia Bridge, focusing on a gondola, and suddenly deciding to un-focus on it. What might happen? I liked the result, because the image of the gondola piloted by the gondolier becomes a dreamy, albeit blurry, tale that may just draw us in more deeply. We can’t quite make out what it is--or can we? The ambiguity appeals to me. This blend of sharp and soft focus fuels my fascination with our Inner Landscape, a dreamlike place where our logical side can’t always fill in the blanks. I think sometimes what we can’t quite make out or fully understand offers a more compelling story.” Simon sometimes shoots his subjects through windows, fabric, and even raindrops to create his distinctive blurred images. Work in this exhibit includes distinctive and unexpected images of roadside scenery, views from his car, and scenes looking out of hotel windows. All of his work is printed in very limited editions.
In describing his creative inspiration, Simon continues, “For me, the key is to not have an agenda, so the making of photographs becomes a purely meditative experience. It’s my mute button. Using a rangefinder camera with manual focus helps, because it forces me to slow down and consider a scene that might make an interesting image. When I’m roaming streets of foreign cities--my favorite places to carry a camera--I often find myself in perfect silence as I focus on a subject, almost as if using a sketchbook .”
Also on display during the month of March will be works by Local Artist Lisa Kinzelberg. Her exhibit, titled Resolution, will include her most recent abstract paintings. Discussing her work, Kinzelberg says, “I paint like a drummer, focusing on rhythm and movement. I let intuition guide the markings, and I do not stop until the work feels alive and has ‘soul.’ My intent is that each piece transmits a quiet yet powerful energy that speaks to our inner nature.” Characterized by intricate textural patterns and bold color, Kinzelberg’s work has been regularly featured by interior designers in the area as a perfect complement to today’s neutral interiors. Kinzelberg lives and works in Winnetka. Her show at the gallery is part of its “Local Artists Program,” which provides exhibition space to a different local artist each month.
Please join us in celebrating these two artists!
